EPLAN – a name that has stood for powerful CAE software that supports electrical engineering for more than 20 years. Before the new CAE dimension - EPLAN Electric P8 - that currently represents state-of-the-art technology was presented in 2006, users in the field of electrical engineering design worked worldwide with two different systems from EPLAN Software & Service.
EPLAN 5
The established software is widely used and was considered as the standard in many branches, such as the automotive industry. Some EPLAN users still work with EPLAN 5 that is, however, not being developed further as a system and merges in the new EPLAN Electric P8. EPLAN 5 as a drawing-oriented system allows for the combined processing of graphics, technical, commercial, and logic information for electrotechnical construction and documentation.
EPLAN 21
The second predecessor of EPLAN Electric P8 is EPLAN 21, an object-oriented CAE system that was developed in the 90s. The use of object orientation, an integrated API interface (Application Programming Interface) as well as the Unicode compatibility of the system provided a strong advantage: Global engineering under consideration of diverse country-specific requirements as well as a high degree of automation. EPLAN 21 is not being developed further either and will also be replaced by the successor EPLAN Electric P8.
The strengths of both systems, EPLAN 5 and EPLAN 21 – have been bundled and merged into the new EPLAN Electric P8. The graphic-orientation and object-orientation technologies have also been merged so that users can now optionally choose between the two working methods.
